I have windows XP, Clickforms, RealQuest, Apex, Geolocator, local MLS and court house stations on 2 computers with adequate memory and speed (Linksys router) that are slowing driving me crazy. Just upgraded the internet speed to 15 (something) and have been on phone with tech support for better than 12 hours in past 5 days and have had the computer guys (they built the machines and I'm sure I'm there smallest client) here.

Norton is going but what should replace it? Any idea why some e-mails would stay in space for 8 hours before they arrive? RealQuest is so slow I almost have time for a snack between transaction history and comparables? And the list goes on . . .

Please suggest and trust me nothing is too elementary for me!

A lot of people swear by AVG. I downloaded it recently to replace Norton and seems to be pretty good so far (knock on wood).

Jan, I am not a fan of 'locally built computers'. All of the major software folks and major computer companies (Dell, HP, etc) work hand in glove a s they design new systems, etc. I have ready way too many times that someone is having problems with software xyz doing flaky stuff. I use xyz and have never experienced any of the problems this person is having. Then it comes out in the discussion that the guy built his own computer or had it built for him.

I think it's possible to save a few bucks on local built systems, but a reliable major company will typically back their product with a warranty etc.

Do you use cable tv for your internet service? That is what I use and have been very happy with it. Fast and dependable. I have my phone service through them as well.

AVG Free. Dump Norton ... it sucks.

Terry -- These guys have built my computers since 1990 and have designed with help from appraisal software providers. Pretty sure that is not the problem.

Think we have the same cable provider, I'm former Adelphia which Times Warner bought. I went and got the latest and greatest modem still e-mail, RealQuest and sporadic speed problems. Do you use the anti virus, spam provided by cable company? Do you have other security like AVG or Norton?

I have Massillon Cable and the Service provider through them is SSSNet.com. There are 3 internet speed levels I can have through them & I go for the mid range.

I do not use Norton, I use Macafee. I've heard too many flaky stories about Norton messing up other software packages.

I use AVG that my computer tech guy put on when he removed Norton. Be aware that removing Norton is a major task. AVG works well and doesn't get in the way. I use the free version, but if you want a little bit more intense protection, including firewalls, you can upgrade easily.

I removed AVG because it slowed things down tremendously. I'm flying with just the AT&T/Yahoo protection package.

My wife works for a large software company. I've known dozens of these people who took off Norton and put on AVG and other lesser known anti-virus programs. I've never heard the complaint that AVG slowed things down before... but, I've heard it continuously about Norton. The program is a system hog. Probably, you either have a hardware configuration that is not compatible with AVG or else something was done incorrectly when you installed it. Are you sure you got Norton completely removed first?

AVG, all the way. Been using the free version and haven't had a virus hit since I dumped Norton 3 years ago.

I used the free AVG for a long while. I loved it. I know use the commercial AVG. It's good but more thorough and has slowed my puter a hair. Puter is a 5 YO custom job.

I am sure Norton is going and I'd like to do what Walker does but I'm conservative by nature.

Could the Google stuff be part of my problem?

What audio system do I need? How many? I don't recognize those programs on the list!

House keeping on a computer is as bad as a house.

I have google toolbar on my computer, and AVG and ZoneAlarm for the firewall. Nothing about an audio system that I know of. Pretty much a forget about it maintenance system.

Jan, I know I'm behind here - but what it's worth, AVG has been my go to product for quite a few years now, no problems - no headaces.

Had found this one really good product, but it s l o w e d my puter down so much we had to dump the sucka; my understanding is that Norton and it's counter part require so much space, they slow the computer down also. Iupgraded my AVG this year for a 2 year period, don't need to maintain anythin - it serves itself......another item that needs little to no care.
