Edd,
You are too kind. To be honest, eight years in enough for any one individual to serve on a regulatory board. There is new blood on the FREAB, and folks with some good ideas and passion for the profession. It's important for other folks to get their legs and not have folks looking over their shoulder.
Although I do not know how it is in other states, members of regulatory boards take quite a hit for their time. Although the FREAB meets only once every two months, it is not uncommon to spend 5 - 7 hours a week on board related business; answering calls, dealing with licensee problems, speaking to groups, etc. Preparing for a meeting with 30 - 55 cases on the docket takes 30 - 50 hours. Board members in Florida are compensated at the rate of $50.00 a day when they are attending meetings or conducting board business. That DOES NOT include everything in between meetings or meeting preparation. My first year, the W-2 said $600.00. One year it was $800.00, and this year it might be $1,000.00.
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I would not trade the experience and the opportunity for anything. However, like most folks, I am not independently wealthy and must earn a living. Although the position I seek has highly structured responsibilities, there will be opportunities to influence public policy and chances to make some changes in the "system".
