Hey everyone,
At midnight today we disabled all custom BBCode inside of the forum descriptions. This was done as a means to counteract numerous problems we have been having on the support desk in recent months as a result of BBCode that is calling external content (i.e. Javascript and Flash) hosted off-network.
As it stands, all custom BBCode is disabled in the forum descriptions; however, all custom BBCode STILL works inside threads.
We had been instructing members to post BBCode requests for forum descriptions into the Feedback and Service Suggestion forum. But, that may be unnecessary given our next step (which will be done hopefully on Monday).
We will modify this restriction so that custom BBCode will work within the forum descriptions, but there will be some restriction left. Namely, we will (initially) forbid BBCode which calls Javascript, VBScript, and the HTML tags for embed, script, iframe, and any other tags which can be used to pull in content from a source outside of FreeForums. This will allow any custom BBCode which is used to format forum descriptions to work again WITHOUT needing to seek approval by FreeForums.
As for whether or not we will allow approval to specific external sources (i.e. cbox or a stats tracker) is currently undetermined. That decision will come later after carefully reviewing the pros and cons with the support staff.
I thank you all for your patience while we make these changes. Have a great day!
