Does anyone use a digital voice recorder in the field? I am thinking of investing in one, as they are relatively cheap, and would make noting special features much easier, but wanted some feedback. Any comments?

My wife and I bought one a couple of years ago to take to Mandarin classes and it worked well. Cost about $100 or so. I have not taken it out into the field, but I do sometimes make voice recordings on my camera. Specifically (relating to my work), I will take notes about woodlots (sizes, density and species, etc.) on my camera or sometimes I'll note special features that may not turn out so well in a photo. I take very few notes by hand anymore. When I deal with improvements, I tend to just take a lot of photos, maybe some video and make a few voice notes on the camera. A voice recorder would probably be a good idea if your camera doesn't do voice-only, but requires a video for recording. Otherwise, sound files don't take up much disk space, and the sound quality on most cameras is good enough to not need a second device.

Doug will probably have some good advice about this. I think he uses the Dragon-Naturally Speaking (or whatever it is called) to get his notes into type.

I have Dragon, just not happy with it, as I type a good bit faster than it can go, and it is prone to make more mistakes.
