One Theory About Why This Site Is So Great...

I'm not really buying the general assumption that it is the freedom or the lack of regulation here that causes the atmosphere to be more respectful.

I think it is first because the core group that joined here already respected each other and were naturally respectful people, anyway.

But I also think that second, if we got the huge numbers of forum surfers that the other forum gets we would have the same problems they do.

This is a somewhat idle question but what would happen in this forum if there were, say, three or four troll like individuals that started posting to almost every thread and being nasty in their disposition and stupid all at the same time and adding 50-100 posts to every thread with inane bickering?

Would our lovely, respectful group just call them names right back and otherwise allow it to continue?

So even naturally respectful people would deteriorate? You are cynical and your comments are internally inconsistent. Most of the people posting here are genuinely concerned about the profession and their positive contributions to it.

That is the difference. When that becomes the guiding principle, one-ups-man-ship looks plain stupid. It isn't respect, its a dfferent game. How the rules were written beats me, but here the effort is primarily to improve. That's what I see anyway.

Good question, Marcia, and although we have not had a Tolerance Level check, as of yet, I will venture a guess, that the responses would be doled out appropriately. If memory serves me correctly, on the Dark Side's arena, I remember seeing the Do Not Attack the Poster, aLot [thanks TC], and generally what would happen next, as an offshoot would spring up later to just continue it in a different thread.

There also seems to be a large number of participants here that are knowledgeable and able to distinguish and or identify a troll. That along with the option to ignore any, that might have that on their agenda.

Of course, this is all subjecture.

Subjective + conjecture = subjecture. Good new word Tina.

I still disagree. This forum was established out of a revolution. The other was established and maintained as a business venture. This one, from its inception, has been dedicated to professional improvement. Not so much purposefully as that it is comprised of an overwhelming number of people who are concerned about the profession. Interestingly, many on here were emphazising the same thing over there and they didn't get involved too much in the ya ya.

Over there the guy with the switch was obviously more concerned about discussion over big boobs than he is with the profession. I do not recall Wayne entering into any substantive discussion, ever. What can possibly be the result other than a bunch of boyscouts with flashlights under the covers? Hard to get useful results from misguided, shallow priorities.

This place is about respect for the profession and not so much about respect for people, although it does appear to be a benefit. Over there the ya ya was clogging the discussions. Here we have plenty of room for big boobs and discussions about them and other interesting body parts and functions. At least that is the way I look at it.

It's already happened, Marcia. At least, with one individual.

Adjust for concessions? Why?

I made a wild guess that he might be Bobby Bucks. Others disagreed. I'm not sure what happened to him... I guess he just got bored when no one rose to the bait and faded into the woodwork.

Can you imagine what would have happened if someone had posted such things in Wayne's World?

Over here it's different. Because everyone is free to say anything they want (subject to the host's rules, no porn, etc.) no one gets very upset. That makes it even possible to have posts by someone like Skippy... whether or not it is tongue-in-cheek.

And, because there is no underlying feeling that someone (mods... favored users) is getting more equal treatment, there is no rush to judgment or need to prove your point. Over here I get along really well with several members I used to clash with on a regular basis over there.

I want to state again (as I do every time this subject comes up) that I have nothing against AF. In fact, I am very supportive of them and what they have done for the profession. My name is still on the petition. I'm just here most of the time instead because I like the freedom.

I don't think SS quoted above was a real troll. That was just someone having a bit of fun!

Not sure who it was, but it cracked me up!

Good question.
The answer is that the Admins would confer, and consider complaints, hurt feelings, disruptive quality, and any other relevant factors. We would decide by a clear majority whether further action was necessary. If so, one of us would be tasked to contact the offender and tell him/her to mend his/her sinful ways. If s/he kept sinning, s/he would begin to have trouble logging on. A lot of trouble.

We're not going to wield the banning bat just for the hell of it, or to make everyone wear formal gowns, tailcoats, and stick up their ass just for the privilege of being here. But we won't let un-housebroken pets tear the place up, either.

This site is better because there is less to read. Especially if you don't read watercooler crap.

It's spelled h-e-r-e, dork.

Gosh! Given your lack of spelling ability you must be a lousy appraiser. :flush:

All the long armed appraisers are here. Better for patting yourself on the back. I wonder why I'm not loved?
