PHPBB v. 3 is released!

Postby Jim Plante on Wed Jul 09, 2008 11:49 am

The support forum has announced that v. 3 of our fourm software is now available. In keeping with the old computer addage, "Never buy the point zero version of anything," we're going to wait a couple of weeks for them to shake out the bugs and de-louse the installation before we switch.

Version 3 is a different animal for us Admins. The setup is complex, but you'll like the results. One thing v.3 allows is subforums, so we can get rid of some of the clutter our forum now exhibits. That damned chat box is going someplace else, maybe in its own forum section. Be thinking about where you want to put it, and let us know. It's not going to stay top center, but I can likely put a link to it there for convenience. (Come to think of it, I've got to find out whether that thing will work with v.3 or not. If it won't, there are others out there that will.)

Change is a PITA, whether its appraisal software or forum software. I've found out that I can set up another forum on FreeForums, get it working the way we want it, then transfer the main forum to it. But that service is not available yet. (They say the end of this week will see this feature added. So figure about a month.) You should not see any appreciable disruption of the board during the changeover. We may be down for a few minutes, but that's about it.

I think putting the chat box in its own forum is a great idea. Frankly, any place would be better the top and center as I find the boxes to be distracting and annoying!

Yeah, me too, Jeannette. I put it there so that it would be hard to miss, and eveyone would get a chance to try it out. Seems like we have enough people who enjoy it to make it a fixture on the board, though, so we need to decide where to put it.

Having one chat box at the top is not so bad, being able to scan it quickly for new post is appealing to me. But having the empty box in the middle chops up the board.

If we stick it in its own forum I think you will find that it won't be used as much. It is much easier to jot a quick note off when the thing is right there.

Anne, I think Joker is messing with you. He knows better than to step on a cow patty after a rain shower, so I'm sure he's seen the box.

As I predicted, they're still putzing around with v. 3 stuff. We'll just wait another week or two.

Admins: One tip I picked up is that permissions have to be set all the way to the bottom in order for your desired permission set to work. IOW, if you want someone to have MOD permissions, you have to set both Registered and MOD to "yes". You can't just set "MOD" and have it override "registered."

That might make sense, in a warped sort of way...but wait! There's more! Setting any permission to "Never" overrides everything in the tree! Including Admins.

As I suspected, this is going to be a PITA until we get used to it.
