I am lazy. I program all the streets I am going to in before I leave. One reaon I am trying to find out if I can pre-program and have it select the best route to get all done without reprogramming.
You don't program it with the computer. It has a touch screen display, so it is very user friendly. |
Really? That is surprising to me. It seems like it would have a usb port. Enter your destinations on your computer and just plug it in to download to the GPS.
If I had to enter one address at a time it would slow me down instead of speed me up. So you can enter 14 - 20 addresses at a time before you leave for an assignment (or a couple of assignments?)

The Maestro has one that can do it, and supposedly, so can the TomTom, but I haven't figured it out yet.
Let me play with it a while. _________________ Whoever thinks herding cats is impossible, has never walked with an open can of Tuna.

At a large workplace, they recently instituted a new fitness program. But a clip-on device that you can put on your shoe and a central computer will track how many steps you take each day. It counts the steps and resets the device as you pass various points in the building complex. If you make a target number, you get some bennie... maybe a free certificate saying what a good little employee you are for letting them track you all day.
1984 was just a dream... the real nightmare is just now getting ready to happen. _________________ The Rembrandt light of memory, finicky and magical and faithful at the same time, as the cheaper tint of nostalgia never is. - Ivan Doig, The Whistling Season

I am not overly concerned about being tracked by my GPS, or my cell phone (much easier to do), or by the computer chip in most new cars.
If we let paranoia drive our lives, we'll miss a lot. I figure the only people that need to worry about the law are the ones that break it, and I have no pity for them. _________________ Whoever thinks herding cats is impossible, has never walked with an open can of Tuna.

I'm preparing for my next "out" day; seven field review inspections. I have seven routes programmed. Each route contains the address of the subject property, original comparables and potential new comparables for a total of 10+ properties per route. Each route has been optimized for the most efficient track to hit each property within each route.
Days like this used to be a giant pain in the rear, even in familiar neighborhoods with a pre-made map with "pins" at each address I needed to see. With the GPS programmed I don't have to think about where I'm going or worry about hitting some kid in the street while staring at a map; just drive where the thing tells me to drive and pay attention to the properties I need to pay attention to. Even my wife has noticed how dramatically my drive time has shrunk since using the GPS. _________________ Everybody grab your torches and pitchforks!

I'm not suggesting that you miss out on this technology. It's really too late to try and stay off the grid, so you might as well enjoy the things that are available to us. However, it is also logical to be aware of the fact that someone (not necessarily government) may be using you toys to follow you.

When I was a child, my grandfather told me something that remains with me today. He said that if he got stopped by the police he would always be very courteous because they can always find something wrong if they want to.
I'll bet if you let me track every movement, every e-mail, and every phone or other electronic conversation you have I can find where you are violating the law... doesn't matter who you are. Now, that isn't so much of a problem so long as the government is benign... it's a much worse problem in places like China. But, now, with the government of the U.S. actively going after some religious cults and certain political elements it stands to reason that it could really become a problem in the near future. Not paranoid, just practical.
I mentioned on another thread that when I saw the fraud presentation the guy made an important point. If the Feds are looking at Countrywide for their bad deeds and your appraisal is in there, they don't really know whether it's a good or bad appraisal... all they know is that it's in a questionable file. At that point it will be up to you to prove it is good. This guy also mentioned that they might be using the Carnivore system to look at e-mails involving real estate fraud. The logic that applies in many areas today is guilty unless you can prove you are innocent. _________________ The Rembrandt light of memory, finicky and magical and faithful at the same time, as the cheaper tint of nostalgia never is. - Ivan Doig, The Whistling Season

Heading toward battlefield territory at this point. Let's just stick to the subject at hand for this topic. _________________ Whoever thinks herding cats is impossible, has never walked with an open can of Tuna.

Got a Brookstone catalog today and it has a TomTom Go930 GPS unit listed for $499.95 & $15 shipping. (why not 500.00 ---who knows?)
It has speech address input.
Bluetooth capable.
New IQ routes.
Advanced land guaidance.
This is a new GPS unit just being released. I have read everything I can find on the internet but got no answers to some of my basic questions.
1. When speaking to the unit to put in your destination, do you require a bluetooth or any other device?
2. Can you add multiple destinations (comps) through the speech address input?
3. Can you delete destinations on the fly, or add new destinations?
4. Are there any annual fees?
Anyone have any answers to these questions? _________________ Don't be a 2 bit appraiser or soon we will all be 1 bit appraisers. 4 bits or bust.

I've had my Garmin Nuvi 760 for a couple of weeks now.
The multiple destinations sometimes do not load but can be retrieved by pushing "Recently Found Places" but then you lose the most efficient order of travel
The bluetooth doesn't work most of the time and when it does the sound quality is marginal.
The mapping and shortest route leaves a lot to be desired.
I still am dependent on it as I tend to daydream on my way to appointments and miss my turns. It is especially useful for knowing at which end of a long country road my subject is located and for finding streets in maze-like residential developments with out constantly consulting a map. I probably should have bought a cheaper unit. _________________

I am guilty of NOT buying bluetooth intentionally. It will get in a fight with your ear bud if you have one, and then you will get yoyo calls.
Very annoying. _________________ Whoever thinks herding cats is impossible, has never walked with an open can of Tuna.

thanks for the update Frederick. I saw a Garmin 750 at Sam's Club for 299 and almost bought it. I came home and looked it up - I can buy it all over the place for almost the same price. No big bargain.
It doesn't have all the fancy stuff your unit has. But I do need multiple destinations. Don't care about the blue tooth.
Oh well, I'll just keep thinking about it. The only time I kick myself is when I'm driving around in circles in some of these subdivisions or out in the sticks. But when I can't even find the road on a map ... I doubt that the GPS would help. Lots of little redneck roads in the county south of me.
I'm sorry you're disappointed with the purchase. Thank you for the warning. I'll get a cheaper one.
