The propaganda machine

The propaganda machine

Postby Steve Owen on Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:58 am

When I went the the Kansas City Museum a couple of years ago, a little known museum in a grand old house, I was treated to a display of the propaganda leading up to prohibition. The media was used in an obvious (from hindsight) attempt to move the general public to accept the idea of alcohol being illegal.

This subject looks to me like it is getting similar treatment. Honest discussion of most of the real issues has been pushed to the background, because that would not suit the purposes of people who want the control and power on this issue.

They said some brokers pressured some appraisers to inflate the value of a home to ensure that the loan would go through.

In my experience, that was every broker (not "some") except to the ones who already had that cozy relationship and knew what the appraiser would do without using pressure.

The real question in my mind, upon reading the article, is why being "good" would not still reap benefits for an appraiser and why the AMC's now hiring most of the work would not figure out who the best appraisers are and use them for the same reasons any other client would. When I was doing secondary market mortgage work the mortgage brokers loved me (except for the occasional time when the number didn't suit them). I would hear comments like "I used xyz appraisal and had to deal with three rounds of underwriter questions... I never have that problem with you." Don't you think AMC's deal with the same issues? Don't underwriters still underwrite?
